Since 1988, the award winning science program Pulse of the Planet, has captured the imaginations of English speaking audiences everywhere. Now, Spanish language audiences enjoy the environmental program, Pulso del Planeta. Pulso’s one minute radio programs provide entertaining and educational information about nature, traditional culture, and science. Using a wealth of scientific resources, the series raises awareness of our environment and our relationship to it. Narrated by Carlos Manuel Tarango, news anchor from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, each program blends interviews with Spanish speaking experts and knowledgeable spokespersons with on-location, natural sound – the signature audio elements of the original Pulse of the Planet series.

The U.S. is now the fifth-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, and as the Spanish-speaking population of the United States grows, our need to encourage Hispanic engagement in science and technology grows with it. This is particularly important when we consider how underrepresented the Hispanic population is in the world of science. In fact, only 3% of Hispanics entering four-year colleges and universities enroll in a science or engineering program. Pulso’s original, Spanish-language programming reaches nearly 5 million people every week and 667,300 people every day through Hispanic Communications Network’s exclusive network of 200 radio station affiliates. This includes the major Hispanic markets like New York and Los Angeles, as well as many small, rural, and burgeoning markets like Raleigh, NC and Chattanooga, TN.
