| Encourage your children to exercise!
Did you know that exercise can help your children to focus and learn more in school? Exercise improves memory and increases your children’s well-being. When children are active and eat well, they sleep better and can overcome emotional and physical problems. In addition, children that exercise frequently have strong bones and muscles, less chance to become overweight and less risk of developing diabetes and other health problems. In general, active children are more optimistic and see the world from a better perspective.
There are many ways that children can be active and have fun. Encourage your children to participate in activities organized by their school, by your community, or even by your neighbors, friends and family. Your children can play sports, such as soccer, volleyball, or baseball, but joining an official sports team is not the only way to get exercise. They can jump rope, dance, ride bikes, help in the garden, take a walk with the family, run, swim, or go out to play with friends in the yard or in a park. There are many options, so let your children try a variety of activities until they find some that they enjoy. Take advantage of the free and inexpensive opportunities that DC offers.
It is also important to limit the amount of time that your children spend watching television and playing videogames. Children under two years old should not watch television and older children should only watch one or two hours of educational television shows each day. Being active is essential for each person’s development and well-being. Don’t forget: with exercise and good nutrition, your children will feel better, be successful and be energized in their daily lives. For more information, call the Helpline at 1-800-473-3003.
