DC Latinos
In 2005, there were 45,901 Latinos in DC, comprising 8.9% of the District's population. (1)
25% of Latino respondents in DC reported having a high school degree or higher, compared to 59% of U.S. Latinos and 99.2% of DC whites. (2)
28% of Latino respondents in DC reported an annual salary of less than $15,000. (2)
Nearly half (41.5%) of the interviewed DC Latino residents reported having no health insurance and nearly one-third (31.8%) had not seen a doctor in the previous two years. However, DC Latino children were more likely than adults to have health insurance and to have recently received medical care. (2)
The overweight/obesity rates of DC Latinos are similar to those of U.S. Latinos and whites. (2)
Screening rates for HIV/AIDS and breast and cervical cancer, elderly Latinos receiving flu shots, and knowledge about HIV transmission were all greater among DC Latinos respondents compared to both U.S. Latinos and whites. (2)
Nationwide, Hispanic students' science scores have improved since the late 1970s but are still lower than whites'. (3)
Only 11% of Hispanic high school graduates in the U.S. have taken advanced science courses. (3)
