About Celebra la Ciencia in Albuquerque

Celebra la Ciencia began eight years ago as grant funded community project to bring science awareness to the Latino families of Albuquerque through large community festivals.  Funded by Self Reliance Foundation, the coalition began at the New Mexico State Fair in 2001. Over the years that initial gathering at the State Fair has continued and grown.

The goal of Celebra la Ciencia is to encourage family and student involvement in informal science among the families in the Albuquerque community.  A committed group of Museum & Education partners have formed a coalition to support and implement this goal. By pooling resources, the coalition partners can provide meaningful informal science experiences for families and introduce them to a wide variety of community resources. They also can support one another with ideas, resources and guidance.

As the coalition gathers to debrief, share ideas and support one another, it is apparent that the group is a unique representation of the “Albuquerque community”, which is dedicated to educating and creating opportunities for the families and children of their city.

For the past two years, with a grant from Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and support from Self Reliance Foundation and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, Celebra has created bilingual science family events at different science centers & museums in Albuquerque.  Supporting community partners include ENLACE New Mexico, UNM STEM Outreach Education & New Mexico MESA.  Celebra averages 7- 8 events per year including the New Mexico State Fair and has served over 6,000 people at their family events.
