The Mid Atlantic Celebra la Ciencia coalition continues to grow and is constantly developing new programs and outreach components for local schools and communities in the Mid Atlantic area which includes; Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. The main Mid Atlantic Celebra la Ciencia components include:
Community Festivals:
CLC participates in both large community festivals, and smaller events at schools and community centers throughout the year. At these festivals, a large CLC tent features various bilingual, hands-on family science activities, and Self Reliance Foundation also provides information about local science education and social service resources.

After School Programs:
The Self-Reliance Foundation, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo’s Community Science Workshop offer after school programming. This programming consists in science education outreach into the neighboring communities of Ward 1 and Ward 4 of Washington D.C. The primary objective of the after school programming is to engage students in underrepresented areas into learning about the sciences. The program also supplements educational information to the students with hands-on activities enriching their learning experiences. The programs are taught using an informal approach in teaching covering various subjects on:
CLC’s Family Science Page has been successfully published weekly in D.C.’s El Pregonero newspaper since August 2006, bringing science and health into the homes of Latino families every week. These pages include interviews with Latino scientists, at-home activities, and parent education articles, all to inspire families to incorporate and think about science and health in their daily life. CLC has been very privileged to include the activities and content from several WGBH programs in recent Family Science Pages, including “Curious George,” “Arthur,” and “FETCH!”.
In-School Workshops:
We currently offer programming at two sites: CentroNia in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, Ward 1 and Powell Elementary School, Ward 4.
The main goals of the program for both CentroNia & Powell Elementary:
Informally educate students about science.
Expand their knowledge and experiences of students beyond the academic classroom.
Increase students’ science content knowledge.
Encourage a hands-on approach to the teaching of science to spark interest and excitement.
To introduce scientific reasoning as a structure for problem solving.
Teacher Open House: CLC’s coalition of museum and science-based organizations in D.C. has helped facilitate many of the CLC activities in the last few years, making it possible for the program to bring science into kids’ everyday environments. On February 21, 2007, CLC hosted an open house with many health and science organizations for teachers in the D.C. area. CLC hopes that this event will connect teachers to many of the great resources the area has to offer, enhance their classroom experience, and provide them with tools to make a lasting impression on their students. This event has become an annual tradition and in future years will work to reach a broader audience and incorporate more health and science organizations.
